Model and erstwhile “actress” Cara Delevingne has long had a reputation for being a bit of a wild child; the model and Chanel favorite is infamous for her partying ways, irreverent goofy faces that she’s known to make at the camera, and tendency to show up late, quite late in fact, for appointments and sittings. Not long ago, she famously “retired” from modelling, declaring it beneath her (not in so many words) and announcing that she would be putting her energies into acting. Yes, I know. That old cliché. Delevingne did appear in the movie Paper Towns, which in true model-turned-actress fashion, fizzled and dies a death at the box office before it even got off the ground.
Not that that’s the sort of thing that bothers Cara. Cara is the product of privilege, having been born to an aristocratic family. Her mother Pandora (52) was a society princess in the 80s, and her aristocratic father Charles is the son of a politician that used to move in the same circles as Winston Churchill. Those who hover around the fashion and entertainment industries have always got a Cara story to tell, and there is almost always an element of entitlement in said story.
This week, we can add yet another Cara story to the mix.
Apparently Cara was recently on her way from Paris to London for her sister Poppy’s birthday party when her bag was pulled by security at the Eurostar train station. Page Six covered the story.
Onlookers say the model acted like a “spoiled brat” as she erupted in fury on her way from Paris to London for her sister Poppy’s birthday bash. The bizarre incident was sparked as her luggage was pulled aside for a random check. As she swore at the officer and his colleague, the 23-year-old got down on her knees and pretended to pray she would be allowed to board the train quickly.
Allegedly, a friend of Cara’s who was travelling with her tried to calm her down, but to no avail. One source described the bizarre incident to Page Six in detail.
It was a full-on meltdown in the middle of security. There were at least 20 people around and she didn’t seem to care who saw. It was like she thought she didn’t have to abide by the same rules as everyone else just because she’s famous. Cara was with a friend who was trying to calm her down, but it wasn’t working. She shouted ‘let him do his f**king job, it’s ridiculous.’ She got down on her knees and put her hands together as if she was praying for the whole thing to be over. It was bizarre
Apparently Cara’s friend wasn’t the only one who was not impressed by her behavior. French security, who are notorious for not suffering fools lightly, gave a statement to Page Six and had this to say about the incident.
Famous people often [don’t] seem to think the same rules apply to them as everyone else. But everyone is subject to the same security procedures regardless of how well known they are. Sometimes celebrities will behave as if they are above the law and will be rude for no reason. They need to learn they have to be treated the same as everyone else.
According to Page Six’s source, the situation escalated until Delevingne finally shouted “f*** you!” at one of the security officers, which as one would expect, culminated in her being dragged-off to a little room in the upper level of the train station for detainment. According to Page Six, she later emerged from the room with reddened eyes and apologized profusely to all of the security agents that she had verbally assaulted, before being allowed to board her train for London. She was however, issued with a fine for verbal abuse.
While I will give Delevingne full marks for making an apology, once can’t help but think that if she had been someone else, someone who wasn’t a famous, white, privileged model, there would have been repercussions that might have been a lot more serious. In the wake of the violence caused by IS in Europe, and in France in particular, the French are right to take a very hard line with their security, and Cara’s outburst would have likely cost anyone else a lot more than whatever fine she was given.
Of course, there are other theories at work here too. One pretty interesting one is that Cara was holding. You know…holding…carrying drugs. Delevingne is well-known for her recreational drug use, especially when it comes to marijuana, so perhaps this was a well-timed performance to distract the security agents from taking too close a look at her bag?
We may never know.
